Theatre Refurbishment
Droichead theatre is undergoing substantial refurbishment works this summer at a total cost of €1 million!
According to Droichead director, Marcella Bannon, the idea is to make the theatre more comfortable for audiences, and upgrade lighting and sound for performers.
‘The theatre itself will be refurbished with new seating, wiring, stage, lighting, equipment, new full bar area and other facilties, with small changes to the reception area,’ said Marcella.
A new bar area will be installed which should improve the flow of people through the building, with audiences able to move freely from the exhibition area to the new bar in the small gallery, and back to the theatre.
Audiences will experience the spend in increased comfort in the theatre seating, and new heating system, whilst artists will see it in ease of getting in, setting up and managing lighting.
Refurbishment works are funded by the Dept of Arts, Culture, Sport and Tourism, in association with Drogheda Borough Council and Droichead Arts Centre
‘It will be far more comfortable for the public,’ continued Marcella. ‘But our primary concern is health and safety, functionality and comfort, as well as improved facilities for our ever-increasing audiences. The building will not, however, be getting a facelift.’

Droichead is open over 20 years, and has seen thousands through the doors attending classes and courses, viewing visual art exhibitions or enjoying theatre or musical shows. This is the first upgrade to the facility in that time.
In recent years, Droichead purchased the historic Barlow House, the former Garda Station, and renovated the house to its original form, and provided band rooms and artists studios to the rear.
Droichead is home to two professional theatre groups – Calipo and Upstate. It has also provided facilities for Droichead Youth Theatre run by Sharon Cromwell since its foundation.
‘I welcome this spend by the Dept of Arts, Culture, Sport and Tourism, in association with Drogheda Borough Council and Droichead Arts Centre as it represents a huge vote of confidence in the arts locally,’ said Marcella. ‘The increase in audience numbers this year has proven that Droichead is a valuable and much-used resource for the community and we aim to make their theatre experience as enjoyable as possible.’
